Ahoy Fellas!!!! Call of Duty!!!
Two months ago, motorcyclists were virtually running for cover. If my memory buds are still afresh, May 31 was the deadline. It was mandatory for the two wheeler riders and the pillion riders to wear helmets with effect from June 1, 2007 at Chennai and other 5 Municipal Corporations (Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem, Tirunelveli). So it goes without saying, helmets sold like hot cakes. But somewhere down the lane, in came the rule, firstly lifting the mandatory thing on pillion riders only, and later on for both.
Now the point I wanted to put forth to you all is why is it so that we shrink like a rotten cabbage when it comes to wearing a helmet. As far as I know, the general reasons cited by riders for not wearing one include discomfort, fear of hair-loss, headache, neck pain, and various other reasons.
Discomfort could be attributed to many reasons. The field-of-view for a person at any given time is approximately 180 degrees. So, when all of a sudden he shoves his head into this case, the field-of-view would reduce to some extent, creating discomfort and uneasiness while riding. Trust me fellas, you will get used to your field of vision after three or four rounds. I bet ya, you would never feel like going out with your head naked..
It is no wonder that there are lot of myths and misconceptions about hair loss. One major myth is wearing a hat, helmet etcetera would attribute to hair loss. Utter rubbish is the term I would love to use. As long as the blood flow to your scalp is not restricted in any way, wearing helmets will have no effect on hair loss. If still not convinced by the above statement, one can always wear a scarf or sporty bandana of your choice, and then wear a helmet.
Some common myths include, that there would be a feeling of suffocation, inability to hear the horn of other vehicles. On the contrary, wearing a helmet protects the ears from the blaring sound of horns, especially at busy traffic junctions, and prevents headaches and high blood pressure. If you are still insecure, then you can always depend on your side-view mirrors. It also protects the face from the ultraviolet rays of the sun and thereby prevents tanning of the skin.
So, a humble request to all fellas owning a two-wheeler, please wear a helmet while riding. And it includes me, too...
